Excerpt from Divination: A Conspiracy of Blood

From Divination: A Conspiracy of Blood:

“Outside the church, Dee blinked in the sudden brightness of the midday sun. His doublet was dusty from his explorations, and he brushed it off as best he could before setting off towards college.
He had just turned onto Trinity Street when he spotted one of the college servants. The man was hurrying in his direction and he looked upset.
Dee waved and the man gratefully weaved through the other pedestrians until he stood before Dee.
“Master Dee!” He called out, breathless as he reached him. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”
Dee stomach flipped as he suddenly had an awful sense of foreboding.
“What is it?” He asked. “Has something happened?”
“Dr Recorde sent word for you – your student Nicholas Whitely has been attacked in the street and injured. Apparently Nicholas was found beaten in an alley near the Eagle tavern, babbling about a Polish astronomer before he lost consciousness.”
Seeing Dee’s alarm, he quickly added, “Dr Recorde said he will be all right – but he has injuries and needs to rest.”
“All this is my fault,” Dee exclaimed, wringing his hands. “If I hadn’t insisted on…” He barely managed to stop himself blurting out details of the investigation, and potentially imperilling the servant as well.”
